The news came after the company’s patent on its heartburn drug Nexium (esomeprazole) expired in Europe and the United States, a move that has led to generic versions of the drug being sold in those markets.
The launch of generic versions of AstraZeneca’s heartburn drug Nexium has also seen a reduction in the number of generic versions of the drug in the United States.
The price increase comes just months after the U. S. Food and Drug Administration approved a similar price increase for AstraZeneca’s anti-inflammatory drug Celebrex (celecoxib), which was later withdrawn by the company in Europe.
The price increases are likely to help AstraZeneca keep its market share in the United States in the future, as more generic versions of the drug are expected to be available in the United States.
“We have been working closely with AstraZeneca to make generic versions of this drug more accessible to patients, as well as to provide patients with generic versions that can be purchased for their refills,” said Sidney Wolfe, director of the Public Citizen Center for Generic Drug Practices. “This will help AstraZeneca’s position as a leading generic drug company in the U.
